There are changes afoot within the United States government and they date back to the historic election of real estate mogul, Donald Trump. One of President Trump’s most notable appointments came in the form of Betsy DeVos to the position of Secretary of Education. As the Secretary of Education, DeVos is being put into a unique position to parlay her conservative values to the rest of the United States. DeVos’ meteoric rise to the top of the United States government may have taken some by surprise, but others who know Ms. DeVos well saw it as something a long time coming.
Betsy DeVos has been a large public figure for the conservative movement in the state of Michigan for years, right alongside her husband Dick DeVos. As the Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos will be bringing a sense of fire to a position that many may have seen as ‘meek’ and ‘reserve’. DeVos has been nothing but a supportive team player in the press, but behind the scenes, it is clear that she is fighting for what she believes in — even when it involves going against what those higher up on the government ladder may believe. Most recently, DeVos came under scrutiny for opposing President Trump’s decision to rescind federal protection for transgendered students. Of course, once President Trump made his decision final, DeVos came out as a public figure that showcased unity. However, even with this public unity people behind the scenes are starting to realize that she is a very real fighter.
Betsy DeVos had been the Michigan Republican Party chairwoman for decades and in that position, she had become a strong voice for charter schools. DeVos became known as someone who champions a cause and refuses to let it go, inspiring others to follow suit. Mike Cox, a former state attorney general, said of Betsy Devos, “I found Betsy to be very determined, steely when she sets her mind on a goal.” Cox would go on to say, “In Michigan politics, she instilled fear in a lot of people, and it’s not just because she’s a billionaire.”
While Betsy may be new to this level of government administrative duties, she certainly isn’t one to shy away from the job. Randi Weingarten, the President of the American Federation of Teachers said, “She comes across as personable, plain-spoken, but she is dangerous.” Weingarten concluded by saying, “There is a real tendency to underestimate her.”
